Two July 2026 developments show bio-based materials gaining design momentum while European product traceability moves from policy to operating infrastructure.
Two developments in July 2026 point to the same shift in sustainable material sourcing. Bio-based materials are moving closer to mainstream design and performance conversations, while the infrastructure for more structured product information is becoming operational in Europe.
On 28 July, Sorona and trend forecasting company WGSN announced three bio-based material directions expected to influence apparel development through 2027: New Nature, Climate Flex and Sensory Empowerment. Eight days earlier, on 20 July, the European Commission launched the Digital Product Passport Registry and its testing environment.
The two announcements come from different parts of the industry, but together they send a useful message to brands and manufacturers: the next generation of materials will be assessed not only by appearance and origin, but also by performance, construction details and the quality of the information that follows the product through its lifecycle.
Bio-Based Materials Are Becoming a Design Direction
The July trend announcement describes bio-based materials as an increasingly important influence across athleisure, luxury ready-to-wear and other performance-led categories. Its three themes focus on hybrid combinations of natural and bio-based inputs, climate-responsive functionality and more tactile, comfort-oriented material experiences.
This is a trend forecast released by a material company and WGSN rather than a regulatory or scientific conclusion. Even so, it reflects a broader change already visible in sourcing conversations. Buyers are no longer interested in renewable content alone. They also want materials that can support a clear design identity, a suitable hand feel and application-specific requirements.
For leather alternatives and coated surface materials, the same commercial logic applies. A fruit-derived or plant-derived input can create a distinctive material story, but product development still depends on the complete construction. Surface finish, backing, coating system, thickness, flexibility, colour consistency and test targets all influence whether a material is suitable for a bag, shoe, small leather good, phone accessory or furniture surface.
For fashion product teams, material innovation becomes meaningful when it can move through pattern development, prototyping and application testing.
From Sustainability Story to Product Information
The European Commission's launch of the Digital Product Passport Registry marks a separate but closely related milestone. The Registry is now operating as the EU-level indexing system for Digital Product Passports. It stores unique identifiers, registration information and high-level metadata rather than the full detailed product data, which remains decentralised under the responsibility of the relevant economic operator or its service provider.
The Commission has also opened a testing environment. Registration can be handled through a user interface or an application programming interface, allowing companies to test how passport registration may connect with their existing digital systems. Six harmonised standards covering areas such as identifiers, interoperability, data carriers, APIs, data exchange and storage have also been published.
This does not mean that every textile, accessory or material sheet must already carry a Digital Product Passport. Product-specific requirements are being introduced progressively. The European Commission's indicative timeline places the adoption of sector-specific delegated acts for textiles in Q3-Q4 2027, after which economic operators are expected to receive a transition period of at least 18 months. The timing and final information requirements may still evolve.
The important change is that the common infrastructure is no longer theoretical. Businesses can now see the operating model, explore the test environment and begin assessing whether their product and supplier data can be structured consistently.
What Material Buyers Should Prepare
For sourcing teams, preparation does not need to begin with a software platform. It can begin with a reliable material record.
Each sample should have a stable material name or code linked to the exact construction being evaluated. Composition information s hould distinguish between the visible surface, coating, backing and other relevant layers where that information is available. Colour, grain, finish, thickness and backing changes should be version-controlled rather than grouped under one broad product name.
Test reports and sustainability evidence also need a clear scope. A report for one colour, backing or coating system should not automatically be treated as evidence for every variation. Bio-based content, recycled content, certification status and end-of-life statements each answer different questions and should be supported by the appropriate document for the specific material version.
Finally, information should remain usable beyond the first sale. Care, repair, disassembly and end-of-life guidance are expected to become increasingly relevant as circular product rules develop. A material that is well documented at the sampling stage gives product teams a stronger foundation for later decisions.

The DPP framework focuses on products placed on the EU market, regardless of where they are manufactured. The economic operator responsible for placing a covered product on the market will manage the required passport, but overseas material suppliers may be asked to provide reliable upstream data.
For suppliers, this creates a practical business advantage. Consistent sample codes, controlled specifications and evidence linked to the correct construction can reduce repeated questions during development. They can also make it easier for brands to compare materials and maintain product records as requirements become more detailed.
This is not simply a compliance exercise. Better material information can support faster internal approvals, fewer specification errors and clearer communication between design, sourcing, manufacturing and quality teams.
